‘Made Mountain’ is a music project by Robbie Manson. For his recently released second album, ‘Here Hello’, I was asked to create the album artwork, with the simple brief: “Don’t make it look like a graphic designer made it.”
I began the process by listening to the tracks that had been completed at the point of creating the artwork, making marks on paper which were dictated by what I heard in each track, breaking them down bit by bit. A mark for the base notes, a swoosh for a symbal hit, small dots for hi-hat hits, and so on. I then took the initial marked papers, and translated what I had created into a larger A2 format, but this time using paint, with the colours chosen to match the same idyllic, dream-like nature of the music.
I scanned the finished painted pieces, and began overlapping them, much like the different elements of the tracks overlapped one another.
